About IS4IS
In August 2010, the Fourth International Conference on the Foundations of Information Science (FIS) convened in Beijing. This event was coordinated by the Social Information Science Institute (SISI) at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan. The conference received sponsorship from the Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence Theory (TCAIT) of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI). Notably, it marked the inaugural scientific conference held under the banner of “Towards a New Science of Information.“
During this conference, a committee was formed to lay the groundwork for establishing an International Society for Information Studies. The society’s purpose would be to promote global and collaborative research in information sciences, information technology, and the information society as distinct fields. It aimed to develop unified conceptual frameworks and apply them practically to address the challenges of the information age. Additionally, the society planned to organize conferences in this domain every two years.
On June 24th, 2011, the International Society for Information Studies (ISIS) was officially registered in Vienna as an association under Austrian law.

Objectives specific to the overall purpose
Conduct research on the theoretical underpinnings of various scientific disciplines, including natural, technological, social, and human sciences, focusing on information. Employ transdisciplinarity and complexity thinking to facilitate this exploration.
Document and preserve theoretical breakthroughs related to information, which can be applied to foster the development of technological and social innovations for the betterment of society.
Establish the scholarly groundwork for effective educational programs in the field of information studies.
Create platforms for facilitating communication and idea exchange regarding information among scientists, engineers, philosophers, artists, students, professionals, industry representatives, policymakers, opinion leaders, and the general public. These efforts aim to nurture scientific inquiry and collaboration.
IS4SI Summits
The IS4SI Summits are regularly scheduled, biannual academic events consisting of several coordinated and co-located conferences on the subject of information integrated by plenary lectures and discussions, intended as a forum for the exchange of ideas and sharing knowledge about recent developments and achievements in the research on information. The Summits reflect diverse perspectives and methodological frameworks of this research and aspire to foster cooperation, integration, and cross-fertilization in this domain of study.
